I was back on the bike this morning commuting to work and it really dawned on me how scared I am now biking in traffic. Since the accident I’ve been on the road maybe a half dozen times or more, but it baffles me at how attentive and fearful of other drivers I am now.

Can't we all be friends?

Prior to the accident, I’d happily rip down the road as fast as I could. I paid attention to the cars, of course, but I also had confidence while biking along the road. I felt I was one of the traffic goers. Now I feel more like an obstacle that cars hate having to deal with and if it wasn’t for bike lanes and lawyers, they’d have nothing to do with us.

How would you like to see this guy barrelling down at you?

Buses are really frightening – they get so close. So close that every time a bus passes me I stop pedalling and I take a deep breath. Too many cars and trucks still have no idea what a bike lane is and swerve into it regularly while they text or talk on their cell phones.

If the cops don't follow the laws...

I’m not sure if I have a heightened awareness or if I have fear. Maybe heightened awareness is the acknowledgement of fear? Nonetheless I’d like the fear to go away. I genuinely enjoy biking to work, but it’d be a lot better if there were no cars on the road…
